A new generation of laptop computers that are built from the ground up with new, low-cost components could reshape the economy, according to the president of Hewlett-Packard.
But it won’t be easy.
“This is the time of change,” said Steve Wozniak, chairman of Hewin Packard in a recent interview with CBC News.
“This is a great time to be alive.”
A new generation The Hewlett packards new laptops are designed to be cheaper, lighter and thinner than previous generations.
They are expected to be the first generation of consumer computers to offer thinner laptops and the first in the world to offer high-end, high-resolution graphics.
But they won’t come cheap.
The new laptops cost between $1,000 and $2,000.
“We’re not trying to make money,” said Woz.
“We’re trying to give people more choice, to give them a lot more choices.”
Laptops are going to become a big part of the workplace.
They’ve become a key tool in helping people learn and manage their finances.
Woz is hoping to make laptops the key way people can access their money.
“I think it’s really important that we put the emphasis on laptops,” he said.
“The most important thing is that you have a lot of choices.”
The new laptops have a price tag that’s expected to hit $20,000 or more.
Wiz is not expecting the price of a laptop to drop too much because of the new components.
But, he said, if a company does drop the price to $20 a laptop, it’s a very good thing.
“What you have to do is, if they’re going to make this laptop and if they are going for $20 and we do drop the cost of it, that will really help,” he added.
The first laptops to be made with low-priced components will be available in the first quarter of next year.
The first product to come out of this phase will be the Hewlett PARC HP-WU10C.
That laptop is being made from the lowest-cost component that can be found on the market today: the $400-million, 4-in-1 computer processor.
The PARC was the original chip for the PC.
This year, HP will add a new chip to the PARC that will make it faster and cheaper to make and ship PCs.
“The HP-PARC will be a lot faster and a lot cheaper to manufacture,” said Chris Kiely, an analyst with Cowen and Co.
In a conference call with investors, Woz said the new processors will be built in a “different way.”
“The way the HP-PUC is designed, we’ve got a really big die, and we have a little bit of a hole that’s going to allow a smaller, lighter, thinner chip to go into the die,” he explained.
“What you’ll have is a smaller chip, but it will be much lighter.”
Woz said HP will build its new chips using new manufacturing processes that are designed for low-end PCs, like the one used on laptops.
“Our process is different than the standard process used in laptops.
It’s a process where we’re using the low-power die in the laptop and it’s using the high-power core in the PC, and that’s not the same process used on a notebook,” he told CBC News, “so it’s very different.””
We are doing this because it’s the right thing to do, it is the right technology, it makes sense for the future of PCs,” said Hewlett president Steve Woshniak.
He added, “There’s a lot to be excited about in the future.”
“It’s going be a great thing to have a lower price point, which means a lot less work for us, and a much greater opportunity for our customers to innovate,” he concluded.
The new computers will be made in an open and transparent way that will allow for the market to decide what it thinks is the best value.
“It’s an open platform,” said Tim Wilson, CEO of PC maker HP.
“You can’t just have this closed-loop, one-size-fits-all process that’s been used for the past 20 years,” said Wilson.
“In this case, we’re going from a very high-performance PC to a very low-performance, high price point.”
Wilson says that HP will have a dedicated group of suppliers who will be able to make parts for the new machines.
“If the customer wants to buy a laptop with a certain type of processor, they can buy it right here in Canada,” said CTO Jim Osterreich.
“But if they want to buy something with a higher-performance processor, there’s going a very, very strong incentive for us to bring it in here.”
